Chapter 11 — Part I — Article IX (Of the Church)

Section 259. Q. Are we still more expressly assured that Jesus Christ is the one only Head of the one Church? A. The Apostle Paul writes, that for the Church, as the building of God, other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 1 Cor. iii. 10, 11. Wherefore the Church, as the Body of Christ, can have no other Head than Jesus Christ. The Church, being to abide through all generations of time, needs also an ever-abiding head; and such is Jesus Christ alone. Wherefore, also, the Apostles take no higher title than that of ministers of the Church. Col. i. 24, 25.
